SPRING CONCERT 2024

Mozart Requiem (Druce Completion).

Handel - Coronation Anthems (Zadok the Priest, The King Shall Rejoice).

In March 2024 the choir held a hugely successful Spring Concert at the Lyle Kirk in Greenock. Along with Glasgow Chamber Orchestra, we performed the unusual Druce completion of Mozart’s Requiem, along with two Handel Coronation Anthems, including ‘Zadok the Priest’.

The soloists were Sarah Power (soprano), Sarah Shorter (mezzo soprano), Connor Smith (tenor) and Colin Murray (baritone). The organist was Christopher Nickol.

An audience of around 135 attended and the response to the music was exceptional. Musical Director Nicholas Wilks said afterwards, “It was a great privilege to introduce our Greenock audience to a new completion of Mozart’s Requiem, which included music which was both familiar and unfamiliar, including some Mozart sketches which are rarely heard. The evening’s highlight for me was when a member of the audience came up afterwards to say what an exciting revelation her first ever classical concert had been.”

Most of the Druce completion of Mozart’s masterpiece would have been familiar, but a special feature was the satisfying development of later movements, and an exciting Amen which Mozart sketched and which the standard completion by his pupil Süssmayer ignored. Nick said “The result is like being reacquainted with an old friend.”

This was the choir’s first Spring Concert under Nicholas Wilks and one new choir member said, “I have so enjoyed the welcome to the choir - and Nick's very personable and knowledgeable approach to the music has made our singing such a rewarding experience.”
